A Letter to Millennials

Dear Millennials,

As you may know by now, our world continues to be in the midst of a severe global leadership crisis. The subject of leadership and leadership development then becomes of utmost importance in eluding another mishap and achieving your individual and collective dreams and goals within the next 30 to 40 years (and beyond). As of 2020, your demographic represented about 1.8 BILLION members globally. Your generation is undoubtedly expected to govern and shape the world in the coming decades. Some of you are already in formal leadership positions to facilitate transformations worldwide while others are striving to ascend to that level. Whether your organizations provide leadership development opportunities, or you are doing it using your own time and finances will not matter in the end. The bottom line is that you must begin NOW unless you are happy with the state of your own professional life and the way our world is being led. A lot depends on what you will do for the next 30 to 40 years. And the quality of your leadership will determine, among many aspects, if our world will move in the direction that benefits everyone or just a few.

I, THEREFORE, NEED YOUR HELP IN CREATING MORE BUT WORTHWHILE LEADERS TO PREVENT ANOTHER GLOBAL LEADERSHIP CRISIS AND MOVE OUR WORLD TOWARD ITS TRUE POTENTIAL.

You, the next generation of leaders, though need to be enduring, responsible, genuine, trustworthy, conscious, and effective (in other words, valuable) if we want to realize a vastly different future, otherwise we will perpetuate the predicament we are in today or make it even worse. We simply cannot afford to repeat such devastating times. Today, we are literally at a crossroads in terms of continuing our ways or embracing a different approach to our leadership development. Despite businesses spending billions of dollars annually worldwide for so many years, leadership programs have failed to generate the leaders they were seeking. Hence, the state of our global economic, moral, ethical, and social climate.

As you know, leaders have the power to change lives, improve the world, change destinies, and inspire others. But, if this power is misused then a leader can do just as much, or more, damage as good. Unfortunately, our recent past leaders have managed to do just that. They have taken our world on a reverse trajectory, causing enormous harm to individuals and organizations. In fact, these leaders guided their publicly traded organizations to lose their value from their peak of $63 Trillion in October 2007 to $28.6 Trillion (a precipitous drop of $34.4 Trillion during the global financial crisis) by March 2009. Now, your generation and mine have inherited the daunting responsibility of not only making up the $34.4 Trillion loss, but also advancing beyond the $63 Trillion peak value – a feat that, to say the least, took many centuries of entrepreneurship, innovation, and toil to achieve.

Aside from the financial destruction, people do NOT TRUST THEIR LEADERS. In addition, we have also become deficient morally, ethically, and socially. In fact, we as a global community find ourselves bankrupt in these once heralded high values. Even exhibiting civility and decency toward fellow beings is becoming more and more extinct. Overall, we have compromised not only our own, but also the world’s potential from manifesting itself. We therefore grow more and more frustrated each day knowing what is possible but not able to realize it. A new dawn of leadership therefore is needed to right the wrong and one that will move human civilization and our planet toward their true capabilities. This new leadership though will be expected to mostly come from YOU – the 1.8 billion millennials worldwide.

You will have to purposefully learn to become a leader considering that more and more millennials are finding themselves in leadership roles and responsibilities without experience or preparation to operate successfully in a VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity) world. Unfortunately, most of you will not be able to depend on your employer to invest in your leadership development. Why? Because according to a 2016 forbes.com article, only 20% of organizations are planning to invest in their top millennials’ leadership development. That leaves 80% of companies choosing not to provide leadership development opportunities to the rest of the millennials. This is shocking considering that you are projected to constitute about 45% of the workforce in the US particularly, by 2025 – that is in less than 1 short year.

So, you really have no choice but to TAKE YOUR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT INTO YOUR OWN HANDS. And the sooner you begin the better. When you do, please start with the foundational element of Self-Leadership. This is otherwise known as the “front door” to leadership development. Many current and past leaders have largely neglected this vital step, thereby leading us to the quagmire we continue to travel through today (and will be for quite some time). It would be best if you follow a different path when it comes to charting your own leadership development, otherwise we will fail to make any progress and move ourselves toward our individual and collective mission and goals.

In other words, learning to become a valuable and TRUSTWORTHY leader – the kind our world is in desperate need of TODAY and tomorrow.
